FTP - File Managers

FTP and file managers are important to upload all of your website file (images, text, data, media etc.).

What is FTP?

File Transfer Protocol, better known as FTP, is a procedure used to upload and download files to and from your web server. Most popular HTML editors e.g. MS FrontPage and Dreamweaver will allow you to edit your WebPages and upload it to your web server.

It is always good to have a quality FTP installed on your pc. It will allow you to have complete control over the files on your server.

Some website hosting companies have FTP software installed on their server e.g. cPanel etc.

An FTP program will allow you to:

  • upload scripts
  • set file permissions
  • create folders
  • transfer files to and from your server.

In order to use FTP, you'll need to download and install a FTP software program on your computer. The most widely used and popular FTP programs are WS FTP Pro and CuteFTP.

There are many other type of FTP software available on the market that are free as well as paid.

Filezilla FTP Client

I personally prefer to use Filezilla which is a free FTP program. Sometimes I use web hosting cPanel File manager as well. Have a look at a video I created below to show you how easy it is to FTP files to a web server with Filezilla.

Web Hosting with cPanel

All website hosting companies should have ftp software installed on their servers for you to use to upload your website files to theis web hosting servers.

From personal experience I have worked with cPanel and Konsole web server panels which allows you to upload your website resources easily.

I particulary like cPanel, because it has got many cool features and tools that you can use to improve your website. FTP is built into cPanel or you can upload your files from 3rd party ftp programs, but then you will need ftp username and passwords complete the data upload.

Watch the video below that I created for beginners to introduce them to cPanel.
