I've been busy with websites for over 10 years now. When I started all the websites was just static HTML web pages and not like we have today.

Nowadays with Web 2.0 technology and cms (content management systems) websites like Joomla, WordPress, Drupal, Oscommerce etc. website are database driven.

So if you decide to get website hosting then you will need to get hosting with database support. Most web hosts got databases management tools installed on their web servers. Some web hosting companies allow you to use your own database tools to manage your database(s).

If you plan to buy web hosting and plan to have a CMS website like Joomla, WordPress etc. then you will need a database(s). 
I personally have lots of CMS websites and I use cPanel and Fantastico de Luxe. I also use PHPMyadmin to manage my MySQL databases.

So the web hosting company web servers should support mysql databases. I prefer cPanel with MySQL databases that I manage with PHPMyAdmin.

If you use Microsoft SQL server then you will use other database management tools like enterprise manager or myLittleAdmin to manage your databases.

Deciding Between Linux MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server

Most web hosting companies have got both Linux web servers with MSQL database support and also Microsoft Windows servers with IIS and SQL Server.

Now you must decide if you want to use open source free database technology or paid. I personally use opensource MySQL databases for all of my websites.

Before you buy website hosting for your site then you must make sure that their servers have got database support and also what type.
